When Doctors Endorsed Tobacco
By Jessica Casiano
Back in simpler times, when Mickey Mantle was playing for the Yankees and Barbara Stanwyck was starring in “Double Indemnity”; Doctors, Dentists, Pastors, Preachers, movie stars, sports stars, kids, and even Santa Claus endorsed smoking. Those images, some just plain scary, were normal to use in peddling tobacco products. There is a new exhibit opening this week in the Healy Hall at the Science, Industry and Business Library of the New York Public Library. The exhibit is called: Not a Cough in a Carload: Images used by Tobacco Companies to Hide the Hazards of Smoking.” The first part of the name comes from an advertisement for Old Gold Cigarettes a brand that boasted that these were “made by tobacco men, not medicine men”. It will be on display through December 26. You can also view it online at: tobacco.stanford.edu. Some of the ads promise: “20,679 Physicians say ‘Luckies are less irritating’ It’s Toasted”; or “No Unpleasant After-Taste” ad from Chesterfield cigarettes. These ads are just two in about 5,000 claiming they have countless scientists and medical professionals - doctors, dentists, nurses - attest to what is now known to be patently untrue. “Not one single case of throat irritation due to smoking Camels!” is a typical assertion. “A primary purpose of the exhibit”, says brainchild Dr. Robert K. Jackler of the Stanford School of Medicine, “is to connect the dots between now and then”. He explains that there is a central theme that runs from the vintage tobacco ads to current ones: “It’s all about youth marketing. The Intent is to turn youth, ages 12 to 22, into youthful smokers. This era of over-the-top hucksterism went on for decades, and it was all blatantly false.” Makes you think twice about wishing for the good ole days…doesn’t it? Source NYTimes
