The Economy and Me
By Mike Jenkins
A while back, I went on a spiel about politics and marketing. I did get a comment for that blog entry, and it gave me pause (and for that, I thank you, reader). The comment essentially spoke to how the wealthy are essential to fueling the economy and providing much-needed jobs. To some degree I agree, but the events that are unfolding before our very eyes do not allow me to believe that this is totally true. With various tax incentives, tax cuts, and tax loop holes, many in the upper tax bracket seem to have been able to pool their monetary resources, thus not effectively fueling the economy. With the same condition of tax incentives etc., many major companies across the country have been able to significantly cut expenses, and drive up revenue and profit by outsourcing many jobs overseas–putting thousands of United States Citizens out of work. What does this have to do with Advertising? I just had brunch today with a couple of buddies/colleagues from my old job at a Florida-based newspaper. The newspaper was bought out towards the end of 2007/beginning of 2008 by a billionaire real estate mogul, but there were many troubles with the newspaper before he came along. There was a need to slim down the bloated body of the newspaper, which (along with many of its comrades across the print media industry) was/is in bad need of reform in this free access internet/digital information age, and low point of the US economy. Before my departure (and you’ll see me speak of this in previous blogs), I watched as a number of departments, i.e. Human Resources and Finance were outsourced to outside companies. Human Resources would be centralized in the newspaper’s parent company located in Chicago, IL. Finance would be outsourced to Puerto Rico, I believe. I worked in Advertising Production–which in the year before I left went through many turbulent changes. The vicious whispering going around was that there was a major effort to have the Graphic Designers outsourced to, of all places, India. This was based on attempts that the L.A. Times had gone through, but apparently, it did not prove successful there (this effort at the Florida paper was confirmed to be true, but because of certain technical and fiscal obstacles, the plan was tentatively abandoned). Regardless, the Florida-based newspaper was desperate to cut expenses, and thus went through many trials and tribulations to do just that. And now, 5 months after my departure, and with extra “encouragement” by it’s rich owner, the trans-departmental cuts are still occurring with no end in site of when this process will stop. I keep thinking, “I got out at the right time.” Mike Jenkins is a Graphic Designer in the Marketing Department of a medical supply facility in Sarasota, FL. There, he designs online and fax advertisements for the company’s products, as well as produces direct mail, print and signage design. He has worked in newspaper advertising for two years, and freelanced for three years before that. http://www.mikejenkinsdesign.com
