MAD MEN - What’s Next?

By Joel Kirstein

When MAD MEN returns for Season 3 sometime next year, it won’t be soon enough as the supply of worthwhile shows to watch on television dwindles down to a mere handful of choices. This is how I see it and how things should roll out:

- Pete Campbell presents his wife Trudy with his illegitimate son he had with Peggy Olsen and even though she is furious with his infidelity, he is overcome with joy over finally having a child with a connectible blood line back to Pete, who finally learns how to drive, change a diaper and his wife keeps on a very short leash from now on…

- Pete becomes Head of account services, lands a big aerospace client, builds up the account to become the biggest piece of business at Sterling Cooper and then proceeds to lose it all by going after a vodka account which turns out to be a front for a Soviet Spy Network…

- Peggy Olsen moves steadily up the ranks at Sterling Cooper and is now a Senior Copywriter and undertakes her biggest assignment to date: smiling more often and being less of a depressing mope around the office. As fate would have it, Peggy falls for the photocopy repair man and the start a torrid love affair!

- Ken, Sal, Harry and Paul cement their status as the office hens and when Don Draper assigns them to work on the Kotex account; they still don’t get it, or a better office…

- Bert Cooper, with a new influx of money thanks to the merger with the Brits at Putnam, Powell, and Lowe, starts a new secret government project: eliminating dust and germs (a communist plot to undermine the west) and trying to spread OCD behind the Iron Curtain…

- Duck Phillips is so overcome with his new found success as President of the new Sterling Cooper; he hasn’t stopped drinking since day one and as a result proves his ultimate worth by being MIA in a drunken stupor and not being able to find the office anymore. Creative morale goes up through the roof!

- Joan Holloway, office manager and built like a brick house tries to re-establish her equity at the office and strike a balance with her sex-offender husband…

- Roger Sterling has it all now: more money, one less old wife, a hot, new, young wife, time on his hands and he does what most men would do in that situation. He has a heart attack! Karma, the ultimate equalizer…

- Don Draper: he tries to become husband and father of the year by realigning his priorities and adjusting to life on a leash, even shorter than Pete Campbell’s, thanks to his wife Betty. It doesn’t hurt the fact that he copped a cool half million from the merger with Putnam, Powell, and Lowe and you know Roger will do anything to get Don back into the fold at Sterling Cooper! Don accepts Roger’s offer and it includes a secret charge account at Barney’s…

-Betty Draper: beautiful, befuddled, with child, stoic and smoking like a chimney, starts a new chapter of Smoker’s Anonymous in her suburb of Ossining, NY and proceeds to descend into a deeper state of crisis when all the attendees of the first meeting consists of all of Don’s old female conquests!

The fun part of all of the anticipation of the next season of MAD MEN is if the third season will pick up in 1963 and deftly incorporate the news of that time like the Kennedy Assassination? Or will they fast forward a bit like they did from season one to season two, going from 1960 to 1962? If they fast forward more than that, I can’t wait to see Roger Sterling wearing a Nehru jacket, love beads and long hair. Remember you read it here first! Whatever happens, it will be very welcomed to see season 3 of MAD MEN!

JOEL KIRSTEIN is a Creative Director who has been in the Ad Agency trenches for 25 years and hopes to see the influence of Saul Bass, Herb Lubalin, Milton Glaser and Jerry Della Femina start showing up on MAD MEN…
