Art On It’s Own
By Chris Nifong
I was talking to a lady yesterday about the lack of design jobs in our area. I threw in an emotional tidbit about how I’ve shed some tears from the stress of not being able to even find a dead end job. I’m tellin’ you folks, I can’t even get a job being the freakin’ rat at Chuck E. Cheese’s. I know there are some people out there boo- hooing about not having a job who aren’t really trying. But for those of us who spend the majority of our days looking for work and get the run around from employers, there is going to be some time you have to stop and do something else just to get your mind off of it. What kinds of things have you been doing? As artists we have the talent to create and for me that has been an epiphany. I forgot I can create something without a guideline, or on the basis of what somebody else wants. My word of advice out there to anybody in a similar situation is to give yourself a break and stop stressing even if only for 30 minutes. Find some canvas, go dumpster diving, open up Illustrator and paint, sculpt, or design something for YOU. Go back to the days when you knew nothing about art and did it for the love of it. Go get lost in your sketchbook….and don’t come out till I say so. It’s more peaceful there. Chris Nifong is a designer located in NC and finds it hard to think of something new to say each time he has to write this part of his blogs. The funny part is, the more he ramble on about not knowing what to say, the more it looks as if he is saying something. LOL, he’s totally cheating.
